Alyssa Devlin, Bogburn Race (1/10/09)
Freshman Caroline McHugh skied to victory as the alpine team continued its pre-season racing at Wachusett Mountain in Princeton, Massachusetts on Saturday. Other Crimson skiers also had excellent results. Margie Thorp placed second and women’s captain Tess Wood also managed a top-15 finish. Alpine assistant coach Erik Kankainen took the victory in the men’s race, while alumnus Erich Horsely placed in the top 10. Sophomore Alec Boardman had a top-15 finish. The course was set in a challenging way, but the snow was perfect. ”Everyone skied as well as I had hoped,” said coach Tim Mitchell. ”I think that let everyone end things on a good note going into final exams.”
While the alpine team was racing at Wachusett, the nordic squad traveled to Pomfret, Vermont for the 25th annual Bogburn 6/12km Classic ski race. The race went off under near-ideal conditions: freshly-groomed powder and temperatures hovering in the teens. Alum and volunteer assistant coach Anna McLoon finished up her wax coaching duties in time to ski to a 7th-place finish! Current Crimson skiers were led by Alyssa Devlin in 25th place, about two minutes behind Anna. She was followed 17 seconds later by Audrey Mangan (33). Other Harvard racers included Anna Schulz (41) and Meri Burruss (50). Shannon Mulshine suffered a broken pole on the first hill but still finished 44th. On the men’s side, Trevor Petach was the highest-placed Crimson skier, taking 20th. Alum Rob Bradlee was just nine seconds behind Petach in 22nd, while senior captain Dave McCahill took 27th.
